Tiananmen Square Overview

A comprehensive guide to Tiananmen Square, one of the largest public squares in the world and a symbol of modern China.

Tiananmen Square is one of the largest public squares in the world, located in the heart of Beijing. It's surrounded by important buildings including the Great Hall of the People, the National Museum of China , the Monument to the People's Heroes, and the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong.

Covering an area of 440,000 square meters, the square can accommodate up to one million people. It is a significant political and cultural center in China, hosting major national events and celebrations. The square is also a popular tourist destination, attracting millions of visitors each year.

The square gets its name from the Tiananmen Gate (Gate of Heavenly Peace), which stands at its northern end and serves as the main entrance to the Forbidden City. The gate is famous for its portrait of Mao Zedong and the national emblem of the People's Republic of China.
